Car lift installation requirements: the pre-install checklist

Nearly every stalled lift installation comes down to one of four things: not enough ceiling, not enough concrete, not enough power, or not enough room around the bay. Check these before you order the lift and install day becomes a half-day job instead of a project.

1. Ceiling height and overhead clearance

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: lights, door tracks, joists, and ductwork all count. Overhead two-post lifts typically need about 12 ft. Under that, look at floorplate two-post lifts, four-post lifts, or mid rise lifts. Also check that a raised vehicle plus the tallest truck you service still clears.

2. Concrete thickness, strength, and condition

Minimum for most 10,000 lb two-post lifts is 4 in. of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured 28 days or more. Anchors must not land in cracks, control joints, or within about 6 in. of a slab edge. If the slab is unknown, core sampling before purchase is far cheaper than cutting and pouring a new pad after delivery.

3. Electrical service

Plan a dedicated circuit — commonly single-phase 208–230V at 30 amp — with a disconnect within sight of the lift. Confirm whether the power unit is mounted on the left or right column so the conduit run is placed correctly. Air-over-hydraulic units also need a compressed air drop.

4. Bay layout, safety, and certification

Allow 12 to 15 ft of width per bay and confirm door swing, walkways, and drain locations. Buy ALI Gold Label certified equipment where possible, and schedule the annual ANSI/ALI inspection once the lift is in service.

Common questions

How much ceiling height do I need for a two-post car lift?
Most overhead two-post lifts need about 12 ft of clear ceiling to the lowest obstruction. If you have 10 to 11 ft, a floorplate (baseplate) two-post or a four-post lift is usually the workable option.
How thick does the concrete need to be for a car lift?
A typical 10,000 lb two-post lift requires a minimum of 4 in. of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no cracks or expansion joints within the anchor pattern. Higher-capacity lifts often require 6 in. or a poured pad.
What electrical service does a car lift need?
Most two-post and four-post lifts run on single-phase 208–230V, 30 amp, on a dedicated circuit. Three-phase and 460V options exist for commercial shops. The disconnect should be within sight of the lift.
How much space should I leave between lift bays?
Plan roughly 12 to 15 ft of width per bay so doors can open and technicians can work both sides. Leave clearance behind the columns for the power unit and for safe walkways.
Do car lifts need annual inspection?

Can a lift be installed in a home garage?
Often yes, if the slab and ceiling meet spec. Residential slabs are frequently thinner than 4 in., so the slab is the first thing to verify. A mid rise or four-post lift is a common alternative when the slab or ceiling will not support a two-post.
